5 Common Causes of Roof Damage

5 Common Causes of Roof Damage

If there’s one part of your home that’s essential, it’s your roof. After all, it keeps you and your home protected from the outside elements. If you find that your roof may be damaged, you may not only be risking further harm to the structure, but also injury to yourself and loved ones. Whether you are looking to extend the life of your existing roof or you want to protect your new one, it is in your best interest to do something about it. As your roofing repair experts in Hawaii, we are sharing these five common causes of roof damage.

1. Weather

Weather is the most common cause of roof damage. Those who live in areas that are prone to hailstorms are more at risk for roof damage, and island storms are always a threat. While Hawaii residents are fortunate to experience nice weather year-round, the sun, wind, pollutants in the air and the rain can all harm your structure.

2. Neglect

How often do you take a look at your roof? If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t look at your roof as frequently as you should; however, regularly checking it can help prevent damage. Look for loose or missing nails, shingles or tiles as well as any holes, and cracked or rotted areas. Additionally, take a look at your ceilings and attic for any obvious leaks or gaps.

3. Tree limbs and debris

Any tree limbs or branches touching your roof are a potential cause of roof damage, as heavy winds can cause them to snap. This can easily be avoided by trimming away large tree branches and keeping the space around the roof free of debris.

This roof won’t be in much danger from branches.

4. Birds and outside animals

You may not think of it, but birds and other wildlife can cause damage to your roof. When these animals make their way onto your roof, they can tear away shingles and vent covers, and make their way into your home. To keep your roof protected and animals out, inspect your roof frequently.

5. Clogged gutters

Your gutters are responsible for directing water away from your roof. But if they’re clogged or damaged, they become faulty and can cause water buildup. This can weaken your roofing material, and cause leaks and severe damage, such as rotting, to your roof.
