Roof Coatings: Silicone vs. Acrylic

You’re in Hawaii. You know the weather here can be brutal – one day, there will be hours and hours of bright, hot sunshine; and the next the rain is incessantly pounding down. Though that’s one of the most attractive things about the islands – who doesn’t love a little island weather? – you can’t deny that it takes a toll on the roof. Some roofs need to be replaced every few years due to mold, decomposition, staining, bubbling, peeling, you name it. But commercial roofing companies have been catching on, and they know that the solution is silicone roof coating.

Silicone roof coatings, like GacoRoof, have a lot of benefits over the traditional acrylic type, but the main one is longevity. How many times have you had to recoat your roof with acrylic in the past decade? Probably a few – and that’s because acrylic tends to decompose with extended exposure to the sun’s rays (and we all know Hawaii has a lot of those). Silicone coatings, though, will normally last as long as the substrate it’s applied to without recoating.

Also unlike acrylic coatings, silicone won’t be harmed even by permanent pooling water. It won’t bubble, weaken, or lose adhesive – there’s not an acrylic coating on the market that can say the same.

Acrylics are extremely temperamental and can only be applied between 55 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. There are no limits as to when silicone roofing can be applied, so you don’t have to fear messing it up.

You can save (even more) money with silicone because it doesn’t require priming. All acrylics require that the roof is primed, sealed, or patched beforehand, which can be both time-consuming and xpensive.

Most importantly: silicone is just easier. No recoating, no hassle. You don’t have to worry about the material degrading, wearing, discoloring, or gathering mold or mildew. With acrylic coatings, though, you’ll have to apply a new coat every three to five years.

Silicone roof coatings are, quite simply, the revolutionary roofing material. They can withstand any type of weather and last as long as your roof does. Plus, they’re environmentally efficient and less work for you.
