Wood Shake Roofs

Wood Shake Roofs from Heritage Roofing

Wood shingles that are rough and rustic in design are called shakes. They come in sizes and lengths of 16, 18, and 24 inches. Nailing wood shingles is done in a way that enables air circulation, while shakes are laid out so that they form a tight surface. Both methods are devised to assure durability and resist decay. Correct treatment of shake and wood shingles can slow down natural weather damage and exposure to other climate elements. However, property owners should always expect a quarter inch of shingle to be lost over time (usually a century), especially in a climate like that of Hawaii.

Wood shingles and shakes can also be installed over previous layers of asphalt shingles or wood shingles. Besides reinforcing the previously installed shingles and giving a longer lifespan to the roof itself, this also makes future roof repair and leak patching a much easier process.

Roof Inspection Procedure

As one of Hawaii's leading commercial roofing companies, Heritage Roofing recommends that roofing systems be inspected at least annually, if not more frequently. Far too often, the cause of roof failure stems from improper maintenance and inspection. Periodic visual inspections and routine maintenance to deficient conditions can significantly increase any roof assembly's long-term service life. To perform an annual inspection, observations are noted with recommended maintenance procedures for the cited defects and visual appearance.

The cost of a roof inspection is minor compared to how expensive it is to replace an entire or partial roof. To maximize the lifespan of a roof system, we recommend that all property owners take the time to schedule regular inspections. We offer a program that can schedule walkthrough inspections as often as needed. Please feel free to call or email us for further information.
